maybe a similair problem?
I tried re-loading the material. and there doesn't seem to be a polygon assigned to a non-existant submaterial.
???

ok, I got it figured out now. I had some polygons assigned to a material that didn't exist. I had suspected as much and was looking for them in the right way but I was looking at the wrong object. The error was in the the last object listed (being converted) not the next object that would have been listed (which is what I thought)
